Hot Drinks and Mulled Wine
Fall picnics, winter picnics or frosty nights at home, hot drinks are just the ticket to warm your soul from the inside out!
These soul-warming drinks are all infused with the aromatic mulling spice blend recipe shown. You can easily tailor the spices to your own taste. Simply bring to a low boil in a large pot and then allow to simmer on low heat. Crock pots also work great for this purpose.
If you still can't find the recipe you're looking for, I highly recommend the book Hot Drinks by Mary Lou Heiss. It has a wonderful recipe selection of specialty coffees, teas, cocktails and punches.
Mulling Spice Blend
| 1 tsp. | whole allspice berries |
| 6-10 | whole cloves |
| 2-3 | cinnamon sticks (3-inch), broken into pieces |
Helpful Hint:
Place the mulling spices into a small bag made of double-layered cheesecloth or into a "tea infuser ball" made for loose tea. By doing this you will not usually need to strain your drink before serving.
Mulled Wine
Did you know that mulled wine dates back to medieval times? At that time it was thought to be very healthy - wine probably was far more sanitary than water in those days!
| mulling spice blend |
| 1 bottle | dry red wine |
| 1 | orange, sliced with peel on |
| 1 | lemon, sliced with peel on |
| 1 Tbsp. | brown sugar |
| | nutmeg |
Simmer all ingredients gently (do not boil). You may wish to strain before serving. Sprinkle a little nutmeg into each glass as you serve it.
Glogg
Glogg is a traditional Scandinavian mulled wine with raisins and almonds. This recipe has the delicious combination of red wine, brandy and beer.
| mulling spice blend |
| 26 oz. (750 ml) | red wine |
| 1 cup (250 ml) | brandy |
| 12 oz. (355 ml) | beer |
| 3/4 cup (175 ml) | sugar |
| 1 | orange, thinly sliced with peel |
| 1 tsp. (5 ml) | lemon juice |
| 1 cup (250 ml) | raisins |
| 1/3 cup (75 ml) | slivered almonds |
Combine all ingredients into a large pot. Cover and simmer on low heat for at least 1 hour. Try not to let it boil, as it will evaporate, and that is a waste!
Cranberry Warmer
This versatile hot drink recipe may be made as is (non-alchoholic), or you may add approx. 2 cups (500 ml) of dry red wine.
| mulling spice blend |
| 4 cups | cranberry juice |
| 4 cups | pineapple juice |
| 2 cups | orange juice |
| 1/2 cup | brown sugar |
Combine all ingredients into a saucepan (or your slow cooker). Simmer on medium-low heat for at least 30-60 minutes.
Spiced Cider
This mulled hot drink recipe uses apple cider and is a favourite of many children. Apple cider is typically an unfiltered, non-alcoholic beverage produced from apples. It is cloudier and more tangy than conventional filtered apple juice. If you cannot find any, apple juice may be used in its place.
| mulling spice blend |
| 4 cups | apple cider |
| 1/4 cup | brown sugar, packed |
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and then let simmer for approx. 25 minutes.
Mulled Cranberry Tea
| mulling spice blend |
| 2 | whole star anise |
| 2-3 slices | lemon or orange, with peel |
| 4 cups | cranberry cocktail |
| 4 cups | hot brewed tea |
Place star anise together with the mulling spice blend into a double-layered cheesecloth bag. Place in a large saucepan along with lemon/orange slices and cranberry cocktail. Heat over a medium-low heat for about 20-25 minutes. Stir in the hot tea.
The cranberry cocktail makes this drink fairly sweet, however if you wish, honey may be added.
