Canada Day Picnic

There is no better way to celebrate the arrival of summer than this picnic idea - a Canada Day picnic! Originally known as Dominion Day, most Canadian's celebrate July 1st outdoors with family and friends and it usually ends with a bang with a spectacular fireworks show.

Invite friends and neighbours to a local park, your backyard, or organize a block party and have a Canada Day picnic. Make it a red-and-white day.

Find some red and white decorations, thankfully the stores are full of Canada Day picnic decor. Think Canada flags on a toothpick, red and white napkins, dishes or even drinking straws. For a more relaxed theme, look for (or create your own) candles wrapped in ribbon and a few twigs. Serve drinks in a galvanized garden bucket filled with ice. For festive mood lighting put a few strings of garden lights around the patio.

Remember to tell everyone to wear red and white clothing. If you are inviting children look for some temporary (wash off) Canada flag tattoos and hand them out as they arrive.

Get everyone involved and make it a pot-luck picnic (less work for you!). Try to keep to the theme with your food. It is a fun challenge for you and your friends. Here are a few red-and-white food suggestions to get you started:

And, as a spectacular, festive dessert, try making a Canada Day Cake (as shown in the photo above).
